What is Domestic Abuse
Domestic Abuse What Is It?

Domestic abuse does not just mean bruises it is a myriad of tactics used to control another person. Many of these tactics can be subject to Criminal Charges.
It can consist of:

EMOTIONAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE
§ Threats of deportation, or withdrawal of sponsorship
§ Hurting pets
§ Breaking things and/or damaging property
§ Using children to hurt or control partner
§ Manipulation, mind games, silent treatment
§ Jealousy
§ Sarcasm
§ Threats-both of a personal nature and against family, friends, pets and property
§ Humiliating comments about culture, religious beliefs, level of education, or disability
§ Extreme possessiveness
§ Isolating you from friends or relatives and can include stopping you from leaving your home, removing the phone, taking the only vehicle when you live far from town
§ Controlling and limiting what you do, where you go, and who you see
§ Opening and reading your mail or other private papers
§ Humiliating or degrading you in from of others
§ Constantly criticizing you and blaming you for everything
§ Repeatedly phoning you (for example, at work or in the middle of the night)
§ Telling you you are the one that is crazy, you made it all up, no one will believe you

VERBAL ABUSE
§ Swearing, yelling
§ Put-downs, name-calling

FINANCIAL ABUSE
§ Hiding money
§ Controlling all money and purchases
§ Abuser spends money on self, while partner and children go short of food, clothing ect.
§ Taking your pay cheque

PHYSICAL ABUSE
§ Shoving slapping, choking, punching, or kicking you
§ Hurting you with an object of any kind
§ Burning you
§ Stabbing or cutting you

SEXUAL ABUSE
§ Forcing you into sexual activity that you do not want
§ Sexually touching you when you do not consent to it

Those who have experienced many types of abuse will tell you that bruises heal but the emotional scars can last forever.
