PRESS RELEASE

September 4, 2008 - Vancouver, BC:
A delegation of seven members from the “We Can End All Violence against Women” Coalition of B.C. is going to India for a two-week visit to learn more about the campaign from its South Asian counterparts.

The “We Can” campaign was launched in Bangladesh in 2004, and since then has spread to five other countries in the region: India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal and Afghanistan. The International “We Can” secretariat is located in New Delhi, India. British Columbia is the first place to pioneer the campaign outside South Asia; the coalition was formed in 2007 and now includes more than forty organizations.

The delegation consists from the representatives of the following organizations: Oxfam Canada, Law Courts Education Society of B.C., Pacific Community Services Society, Vancouver and District Labour Council, Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society and Vancouver and Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Services.

The program of the delegation will include visiting Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh region, and Haridwar in Uttarakhand, where Canadian delegates will meet with Indian alliance partners and visit local communities. The delegation will also spend some time in Delhi meeting with the coordinators of Indian “We Can” campaign.

On the way back the delegation will stop in London (UK) to meet with the representatives of several European organizations that are planning to launch the campaign in the Netherlands and the UK in the near future.

The “We Can” Coalition of B.C. expects to produce a video and prepare a range of other materials based on the trip that will be used for campaigning during the 16 Days of Action to End Violence against Women (25 November – 10 December).
